Debating trio to join World Debate

The formidable debating trio from INTI College Sarawak comprising Gordon Ting, Michael Temitope and Chen Soon Ping will be participating in the World Debate to be held at Multimedia University in Cyberjaya from December 26-27.

The world-class debate to be held for the first time in Malaysia attracted six teams from Sarawak.

On their chances, the team members concurred: “We have a good chance of bringing the trophy home.” They noted that it would more difficult this time as the topic for the debate will only be revealed on the day of the competition itself, some 30 minutes before the competition.

The trio disclosed that their participation in debates had helped them “think on their feet” when solving issues, just like in real-live situations. “It also exposes us to a wide spectrum of usage of the English Language.”

They observed that Sarawak had the potential to produce world-class debaters since speakers with potential could be found in large numbers; and that given proper training under international adjucators and exposure to international regulations, the state could become a leading “powerhouse” in debating.

The team recently beat three other finalists to emerge champion in the World Style English Debate Challenge 2004 for institutions of higher learning in Sarawak.

The debating championship themed ‘Caring For Our Society and Values’ was jointly held by the Sarawak Foundation and Unimas at Auditorium P Ramlee, RTM in Kuching.
