Globalised Group Attending MBA Programme at INTI

INTI College Sarawak’s Master in Business Administration programme has attracted working adults desirous of upgrading management skills from around the globe.

One such individual is newly wed Fatimah Basheer who worked for 10 years in a bank and left her job as the Regional Branch Operational Manager in her native Nigeria. She revealed: “I used to wonder about my job description and could not understand its purpose and I was not able to manage the environment.

I was also facing problem in communicating as there was lack of communication from the top management. But now, after pursuing my MBA, I learned why it has to be done and saw a different perspective of my work.” Her working experience proved invaluable in completing her assignments and she described her completion of the master’s programme as an “interesting achievement” and had never thought of “going this far.” Fatimah also mentioned that leaving her job to pursue her studies “is a worthwhile sacrifice” and she was so happy with the programme that she recommended a friend in Nigeria to pursue the same course at INTI. That friend took her advice and is due to complete his studies this August.

Meanwhile, for Ng Siew Hong who is the Operations and Improvement Director at 1st Silicon, felt that having a master’s degree would be handy one day as “corporate life is ever-challenging”. She hopes to take up teaching, as she is interested in pursuing academic work.

In view of her challenging job, Siew Hong opted to study part-time. “I am therefore glad to have classes only in the evenings and over the weekends. My children are grown-up and are therefore very independent and my husband is very supportive and understanding.”

“I study at night and my interests in my studies make my sacrifice worthwhile. My lecturers are also very supportive,” she said, further disclosing that she hopes to pursue her doctorate studies after completing her master’s by end of 2007.

Siew Hong was glad to have met people of different nationalities in her class and found them “a very interesting blend of people.” “I have classmates from China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Nigeria and Germany and I find them very creative and friendly. They also always give good input during our discussion sessions.”

For Normah’s Medical Specialist Hospital, IT Manager Tan Hai Shi, studying the MBA was his way of enhancing his management skills and to open his mind on managerial matters instead of concentrating only on technical skills.

Tan, who is also taking the programme on a part-time basis, is now in his fifth semester and he finds the programme very interesting. “I have gained lots of knowledge from my classmates and lecturers who are really knowledgeable in their field of work,” he shared.

Further, Tan highlighted a unique feature of INTI’s MBA programme. “Here we have group discussion. The Postgraduate Centre is very cosy and provides a good venue for group discussions. My classmates are very cooperative in that they share their views and opinions with others. These inputs from them are valuable as it provides me with the insight of how to handle a similar situation.”

“I am indeed happy to be studying among people who are very exposed and experienced in their field of work. This rare opportunity provides a useful groundwork for networking in the future,” he concluded.

INTI’s Master in Business Administration programme is conducted in conjunction with Australia’s Southern Cross University on both part-time and full time mode. The MBA programme is open for interested students or working adults three times a year namely in January, May and September. Applications for the September intake are now open.
